Jackie Stewart Discusses Evolution of F1 Safety Standards

Jackie Stewart, a three-time Formula 1 champion, has expressed that the enhanced safety standards in F1 enable contemporary drivers to race with greater aggression than those in previous eras. He shared these insights during an interview with his grandson, Lucas Stewart.

Stewart highlighted his efforts in the 1960s and 1970s to improve safety in motorsport, noting that while mistakes still occur, they no longer result in fatalities as frequently as before. He remarked on the significant reduction in the risk of death in racing today compared to his own career, where crashes often had dire consequences.

Reflecting on the past, Stewart recalled the dangers of racing, mentioning memorial benches dedicated to fallen drivers near his home. He emphasized the importance of safety improvements, stating that motorsport today is safer than ever, although he acknowledged that while fatalities are unlikely, they are not impossible.
