Jacob van Rooyen Faces Match Review Officer Scrutiny After Incident

Melbourne forward Jacob van Rooyen is likely to face scrutiny from the match review officer after a high contact incident involving Port Adelaide defender Aliir Aliir during a recent game.

The incident occurred with three minutes left in the second quarter when Aliir attempted to take a mark. Van Rooyen, arriving late, swung his arm and struck Aliir in the head and neck area. Although Aliir lay motionless for a brief period, he managed to recover but failed his head injury assessment and did not return for the remainder of his 200th game.

Following Melbourne's 76-point victory, coach Steven King refrained from commenting on the incident, stating he needed to review it further. Port Adelaide coach Josh Carr noted that while the incident did not appear malicious, it resulted in a concussion, prompting the match review officer to examine the situation closely. With finals approaching, van Rooyen's potential suspension could significantly impact Melbourne's lineup, as he is the team's leading goal scorer this season with 42 goals from 22 games.
