Jade Mullen's Unique Path to the Women's Rugby League World Cup
Jade Mullen, an Army officer and captain of the Army rugby union team, is competing for Wales in the Women's Rugby League World Cup in Australia. Her journey to this tournament has been marked by a late switch to rugby league, encouraged by her friend and fellow Army member, Bethan Dainton.
Prior to January, Mullen had no experience in rugby league but began training with the London Broncos after Dainton's suggestion. She quickly adapted to the sport, balancing her training with her commitments to rugby union and her military duties. Mullen has since played for Wales in the World Cup and contributed to the London Broncos' success in winning the National Championship.
At 34 years old and originally from Caerphilly, Mullen has a rich rugby background, having started in rugby union after joining the Army at 17. She led the Army team to victory over the Navy at Twickenham in 2023. Despite Wales facing tough competition in the World Cup, Mullen has received strong support from her family and the Army rugby team, who are currently in Canada.
