James Vowles Addresses Cause of Sainz-Piastri Collision at Hungarian GP

James Vowles, the team principal of Williams, has provided insights into the collision between Carlos Sainz and Oscar Piastri during the Hungarian Grand Prix. He attributed the incident to failures in the FIA's automated blue flag system and communication lapses within his team.

Vowles accepted responsibility for the incident, explaining that the confusion arose from a breakdown in race control technology, particularly the GPS blue flag system that typically alerts drivers when a leader is approaching. During the race, this system malfunctioned, leading to reliance on traditional flag signals that failed to clearly indicate which driver needed to yield.

As a result of the miscommunication and the malfunctioning system, Sainz received a five-second penalty for the collision and finished in 18th place, while Piastri later retired due to a gearbox issue. Vowles emphasized the need for improved mechanisms to handle such failures in the future.
