Jason McCourty Advises Chiefs on Patrick Mahomes' Preseason Participation

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid indicated that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is unlikely to participate in preseason games this August. Mahomes has not played since suffering a torn ACL and LCL in December 2025, although he has been active in training camp.

During a segment on ESPN's Get Up, analyst Jason McCourty emphasized the need for Mahomes to gain confidence in his knee before the Chiefs' season opener against the Denver Broncos on September 14. He raised concerns about Mahomes' mental readiness to handle game situations without preseason experience.

While both Mahomes and Reid are optimistic about his recovery, there are still steps to be completed before he can be cleared for gameplay. Mahomes is not expected to play in the Chiefs' preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams on August 15, and it remains uncertain if he will participate in subsequent preseason games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or the Seattle Seahawks.
