Jayden Daniels Issues Cease-and-Desist to LSU Over NIL Rights

Jayden Daniels, the Washington Commanders quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner, has taken legal action against LSU, his former university, by sending a cease-and-desist letter regarding the use of his name, image, and likeness (NIL).

The letter, sent to LSU's athletic director on August 5, claims the university has exceeded its authorization to use Daniels' NIL. This dispute arose after LSU assigned the jersey number Daniels wore to another player, DJ Pickett. Daniels' attorney stated that the grace period for LSU to use his likeness has expired and warned of potential legal action if the school continues.

Daniels' family expressed disappointment over LSU's decision to give his number to another player, believing it should have been honored due to his significant contributions to the university. LSU's policy on retiring jerseys requires players to be five years removed from competition and have notable achievements, such as winning a Heisman Trophy. While Daniels has not had his jersey retired, LSU head coach Brian Kelly acknowledged that he deserves recognition alongside other notable players.
