Jeff Bezos-Backed Consortium Acquires 38% Stake in Liverpool
Fenway Sports Group (FSG) announced the sale of approximately 38% of Liverpool to 1892 Holdings, a consortium backed by Jeff Bezos, on Tuesday. This revelation followed earlier reports suggesting the stake was around one-third, leading to some confusion regarding the exact figures.
FSG typically does not disclose specific ownership percentages, but the organization aimed to clarify the investment's scale after various media reports. The confirmation of a 40% stake raised concerns among some Liverpool stakeholders about transparency in the communication of the deal.
The 1892 Holdings group, which includes billionaire Eduardo Saverin and is led by Amit Bhatia, will see Bezos' business partner Bryan Baum join Liverpool's board, although Bezos himself will not take a board position. The agreement reportedly includes an option for the consortium to acquire a controlling stake within the next year, prompting questions about FSG's long-term plans for the club.
