Jenny Simpson Retires from Running Following Heart Condition Diagnosis
Jenny Simpson, a 39-year-old Olympic medallist, has announced her retirement from running after being diagnosed with a rare heart condition. The former 1500m world champion collapsed during a pop-up event in North Carolina in June, requiring CPR and defibrillation before being hospitalized.
Simpson was diagnosed with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), a genetic condition that affects the heart's muscle cells. This condition can lead to serious complications, making it unsafe for her to return to competitive running.
Throughout her career, Simpson achieved significant milestones, including winning gold at the 2011 World Championships and a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics. She expressed gratitude for her athletic journey, acknowledging the challenges and triumphs she experienced.
