Jeremy Doku, a winger for Belgium and Manchester City, faced criticism for his choice to leave the national team during the World Cup to attend the birth of his first child. His wife, Shireen, was expected to give birth in early July, prompting Doku to announce his intention to prioritize family even if Belgium remained in the tournament.

The criticism came from France Pierron, a presenter at L'Equipe, who made disparaging remarks about Doku's decision. Following backlash, L'Equipe issued an apology, stating that Pierron's comments did not align with the organization's values. The presenter also apologized and was suspended from her show until the season's end.

Doku missed Belgium's match against Iran to be present for the birth of his son, Praise. He acknowledged the public's reaction to his decision and expressed empathy for the journalist, emphasizing that he did not harbor any resentment towards her and recognized her right to her opinion.
