Jerusalem Court Acquits Man Who Attacked Nun Due to Mental Health
An Israeli court has acquitted Yona Schreiber, a Jewish man who attacked a nun in Jerusalem, citing his mental health as the reason for the decision. The incident, which occurred in April and was captured on CCTV, involved Schreiber pushing and kicking the French nun in the Old City, leading to public outrage.
The Jerusalem Magistrates Court determined that Schreiber was experiencing a psychotic episode at the time of the assault and ruled him not criminally responsible for his actions. He has been ordered to spend up to six years in a psychiatric hospital. The nun sustained injuries, including a bruised face and leg, after hitting her head on a stone block.
The attack has intensified concerns regarding the harassment of Christian clergy and pilgrims by Jewish extremists in the area. The French Consulate and Israel's foreign ministry condemned the assault, emphasizing the importance of religious freedom and coexistence in Jerusalem.
