Jesús Luzardo Achieves First Career Shutout in Phillies' Victory Over Braves
Jesús Luzardo delivered an impressive performance, striking out 12 batters and allowing just two hits in his first career shutout, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 1-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Monday.
Kyle Schwarber contributed to the win with a solo home run in the eighth inning, marking his 43rd homer of the season. Luzardo, who has been named the NL pitcher of the month for August, completed the game in 109 pitches, not issuing a walk until the ninth inning.
The victory allowed the Phillies to split a four-game series with the Braves, reducing Atlanta's division lead to four games. The Braves' Grant Holmes also had a strong outing, striking out six batters over six innings, but the Phillies were able to capitalize on their scoring opportunities.
