Jets Release Bailey Zappe from Backup Quarterback Competition

Bailey Zappe is no longer in contention for the backup quarterback position with the New York Jets, following his release on Saturday, as reported by ESPN.

Zappe, who previously started eight games for the New England Patriots, was competing with Brady Cook for third-string duties. Cook, an undrafted rookie, is also a candidate for the practice squad. The Jets are expected to name rookie Cade Klubnik as the primary backup to starter Geno Smith, although this has not been officially confirmed by head coach Aaron Glenn.

Zappe's last game as a starter was with the Cleveland Browns in 2024, where he completed 2 of 5 passes. The Jets signed him in January on a one-year contract without guaranteed money, meaning there is no dead-cap charge following his release.
