Jimmy Rimmer, European Cup Winner, Passes Away at 78

Jimmy Rimmer, a former goalkeeper for Aston Villa and Manchester United, has died at the age of 78. He was born in Southport and was part of the Manchester United team that won the European Cup in 1968, although he did not play in the final.

Rimmer joined Aston Villa in 1977, where he played for seven years and was in goal during their 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich in the 1982 European Cup final, though he was substituted early due to injury. He made 229 league appearances for Villa and also played for Swansea City and Arsenal, where he was named player of the season in 1974-75.

He earned one cap for the England national team in a friendly match against Italy in 1976. Both Aston Villa and Manchester United expressed their sorrow at his passing, with Arsenal also paying tribute. His former teammate Alex Stepney shared condolences on social media.
