J.J. McCarthy Remains Vikings' Backup Quarterback
J.J. McCarthy is officially the backup quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, supporting Kyler Murray. This status raises questions about its permanence as the preseason progresses.
Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell noted that McCarthy has taken all the second-team reps in practice and has performed well. He emphasized the importance of competition within the quarterback room, mentioning that McCarthy, along with Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer, is expected to prepare as if he could be the starter.
McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft, played 17 snaps in the preseason opener against the Giants, completing 4 of 7 passes for 34 yards, although the Vikings did not score during his drives.
