Joe Cordina Cleared of Assault Charges After Self-Defense Ruling
Joe Cordina, a former boxing world champion, has been acquitted of assaulting a man outside a petrol station in Pentwyn, Cardiff. The incident occurred in February and resulted in Cordina being barred from entering the US for a WBO lightweight title fight.
District Judge Charlotte Murphy ruled that Cordina's actions were justified, stating he believed he needed to defend himself. The altercation began when Jamie O'Brien, who was sitting near the petrol station exit, pushed Cordina with his shoulder. CCTV footage captured Cordina responding with a punch that knocked O'Brien to the ground.
O'Brien had previously admitted to a charge of assault by beating. The judge noted that Cordina's response was proportionate and rejected any claims of retaliation. Cordina expressed concerns about the potential impact of a criminal conviction on his boxing career.
