Joey Barton Remains in Custody Ahead of 2027 Assault Trial

Joey Barton, a former professional footballer, will continue to be held in custody until his trial in March 2027 following a denied bail application. The 44-year-old, from Widnes, Cheshire, is accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Kevin Lynch, 51, during an incident at Fairway, Huyton, on March 8.

The trial was postponed last week at Liverpool Crown Court, where Judge David Potter scheduled the proceedings for March 8, 2027. Barton is alleged to have assaulted Lynch after they had been drinking together at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club, resulting in serious injuries to Lynch's eye.

Barton appeared via videolink from HMP Liverpool during a hearing on Monday, where his renewed bail request was rejected. He is set to attend a pre-trial hearing on December 11, with the trial expected to last two weeks. Barton has played for several clubs, including Manchester City and Newcastle, and has one cap for the England national team.
