John Daly Reflects on the 2004 US Open Embarrassment
John Daly revealed that he could not bear to watch the 2004 US Open at Shinnecock Hills due to the golf course's poor condition. He commented on the challenges faced by players during the tournament, which is known for being one of the toughest tests in golf.
Retief Goosen won the event, while Phil Mickelson also finished under par. The conditions were so problematic that ground staff had to water the seventh green between groups, as players struggled to keep their balls on the putting surface. Daly described the situation as a shambles, stating that he found it embarrassing to watch his fellow competitors struggle.
Daly, who has won both the PGA Championship and The Open Championship, has never finished in the top 10 at the US Open. His last appearance in the event was in 2005 at Pinehurst, where he made the cut. Shinnecock Hills has since hosted the US Open two more times.
