Jonathan Davies Urges Welsh Rugby Union Board to Resign

Jonathan Davies, a former captain of the Wales rugby team, has publicly called for the resignation of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) board. This demand follows similar calls from Welsh business leaders and local politicians in Swansea, who have also requested the departure of chief executive Abi Tierney.

The WRU board currently consists of 11 members after the exit of chair Richard Collier-Keywood in March 2026. Among the board members are interim vice-chair John Manders and several independent directors. Davies criticized the board for its failure to deliver results over the past three years and suggested that an interim board should be established to guide the organization.

Recent developments include the WRU's announcement to reduce the number of professional teams from four to three by 2028, which has raised concerns for teams like Scarlets and Ospreys. Scarlets' managing director has called for more transparency from the WRU, while Ospreys have expressed their belief that maintaining four teams is essential. Davies emphasized the need for change in Welsh rugby to ensure it remains a vital part of the community and culture.
