Jonathan Ornelas Chooses Free Agency After Clearing Waivers

Infielder Jonathan Ornelas has opted for free agency after being designated for assignment by the Milwaukee Brewers and clearing waivers. He was subsequently assigned to Triple-A Nashville.

At 26 years old, Ornelas has had a career marked by limited big league appearances, totaling 80 plate appearances across four seasons with a batting line of .203/.253/.230. He has played various positions including second base, third base, shortstop, left field, and center field.

After exhausting his final option season in 2025, he became a free agent following an outright assignment by Atlanta. He signed a minor league deal with the Yankees for the current season but performed well in the minors, leading to his decision to opt out. In 308 plate appearances this season, he has achieved a .310 batting average with 11 home runs and 11 stolen bases. Ornelas is now looking for new opportunities in the open market and could be eligible for postseason play if he signs with a team by September 1.
