Jonty Rhodes Warns of Franchise Cricket's Impact on ODIs

Jonty Rhodes has raised concerns about the impact of franchise-based T20 cricket on the future of bilateral One-Day Internationals (ODIs). Speaking at a promotional event in Mumbai, the former South African cricketer noted that the increasing popularity of T20 leagues could lead players to prioritize franchise opportunities over their international careers.

Rhodes highlighted that while the 50-over World Cup maintains the format's presence on the international stage, the proliferation of T20 leagues might result in fewer bilateral ODI series. He suggested that players may opt to shorten their international commitments to focus on lucrative franchise contracts.

Drawing a comparison with football, Rhodes pointed out that many top players spend most of their careers with clubs, participating in international competitions like the FIFA World Cup only occasionally. He acknowledged that this shift could be challenging for traditionalists who view national representation as the pinnacle of a player's career.
