José Barrero Declares Free Agency After Orioles Roster Move
José Barrero, an infielder and outfielder for the Orioles, has been taken off the team's 40-man roster and has opted for free agency, according to reports.
The 28-year-old player participated in only two games for Baltimore this season, achieving one hit in six at-bats. Most of his time was spent in Triple-A, where he recorded a batting average of .202 with 23 home runs and 13 stolen bases over 499 plate appearances.
Once regarded as a top prospect, Barrero signed with the Reds in 2017 for a $5 million bonus and made his MLB debut in 2020. Despite a strong performance in the minor leagues in 2021, his overall major league statistics reflect challenges, including a career batting average of .182 and a high strikeout rate. He has played various infield and outfield positions and will seek new opportunities in the minor leagues this winter.
