Juan Pablo Montoya Critiques George Russell's Penalty at US Grand Prix
Juan Pablo Montoya, a former Formula 1 driver, has raised questions regarding the five-second penalty imposed on George Russell during the United States Grand Prix.
Russell received the penalty for leaving the track at Turn 12 and rejoining ahead of Oscar Piastri from McLaren on the opening lap at the Circuit of the Americas. He ultimately finished in eighth place, while his teammate Kimi Antonelli secured the victory.
Montoya stated that he was surprised by the decision, asserting that Russell did not gain an advantage from the incident. The FIA stewards determined that Russell had left the track and rejoined in a manner that provided him a lasting advantage, although they mitigated the usual ten-second penalty to five seconds due to the circumstances of the first lap.
