Juli Inkster Advocates for Lower Age Limit in Women's Golf
Juli Inkster, a 66-year-old golfer, is advocating for a change in the age eligibility for the U.S. Senior Women’s Open, proposing to lower the minimum age from 50 to 40. This week, she demonstrated her competitive skills by shooting a score of 70 at Barton Hills, showcasing her ability to compete effectively against younger players.
Inkster's argument is bolstered by her own performance, as she previously became the oldest player to make an LPGA Tour cut. She emphasizes that women's bodies undergo changes after 50, which should be considered in the sport's age regulations. Many former players, including Annika Sorenstam and Karrie Webb, support revising the age limit, suggesting that it could enhance competition.
However, USGA CEO Mike Whan has expressed reservations about lowering the age limit, citing concerns about the strength of the competition. The debate continues, with questions about whether such a change would benefit older players or shift the focus to younger competitors.
