Justin Gaethje Uncertain About UFC Return Until 2027
UFC lightweight champion Justin Gaethje has stated that he is not ready to compete again, with hand injuries from his victory over Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250 still healing.
Despite winning the undisputed lightweight title in that match, Gaethje expressed concerns about fighting again in 2026, noting that he is unable to punch due to the injuries. He plans to enjoy his championship status for the remainder of the year after having fought twice in the first half of the year.
With Gaethje's absence extending into 2027, the lightweight division remains in flux. Arman Tsarukyan's team has been informed that a victory over Mauricio Ruffy at UFC 331 could secure him a title shot. Charles Oliveira and Max Holloway are also in contention, with Oliveira likely positioned ahead after defeating Holloway in March. Gaethje has indicated he would be open to avenging his previous losses to both fighters when he is ready to return.
