Justin Steele Approaches Key Milestone in Recovery for Chicago Cubs
Chicago Cubs pitcher Justin Steele is making progress in his recovery from a flexor strain in his pitching elbow and is close to facing hitters. This update was reported by Cubs beat writer Meghan Montemurro, indicating that Steele is nearing the live batting practice phase of his rehabilitation.
Steele has not pitched in a major league game since April 7, 2025, when he had a strong outing against the Texas Rangers. He underwent ulnar collateral ligament revision surgery later that month, following a previous Tommy John surgery in 2017. A flexor strain diagnosed during his rehab in late April 2026 further delayed his return, pushing back the Cubs' hopes for his midseason comeback.
Manager Craig Counsell has noted that due to the timing, it is unlikely Steele will return as a traditional starter this season. Instead, he may contribute in a relief role as the Cubs aim for a playoff spot. Steele has a career record of 32-22 with a 3.30 ERA over five seasons with the Cubs, and his return could provide a much-needed boost to the pitching staff as they navigate injuries. The Cubs currently hold a 74-53 record, sitting second in the NL Central.
