Justin Steele Begins Rehab Assignment with Triple-A Iowa

Chicago Cubs left-handed pitcher Justin Steele is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday, moving closer to a potential return after being sidelined for nearly 17 months.

This assignment follows weeks of live batting practice and bullpen sessions in Arizona. Steele last played in the majors on April 7, 2025, before undergoing revision surgery on his left ulnar collateral ligament and later dealing with a flexor strain in April 2026.

Despite his All-Star status in 2023 and a career ERA of 3.30 over 102 major league appearances, Cubs officials have indicated that a full return as a traditional starter this season is not feasible. Instead, the plan is for him to pitch in shorter bursts out of the bullpen. The Cubs, currently in a strong position for the wild-card race, will monitor Steele's progress closely as he aims to contribute before the season ends.
