Kai Spears Wins $9.25 Million in Defamation Case Against The New York Times
Kai Spears, a former walk-on basketball player at the University of Alabama, received $9.25 million in damages from an Alabama jury this week in a defamation lawsuit against the New York Times.
The jury determined that the newspaper had defamed Spears by inaccurately reporting that he was present during a fatal shooting incident involving 23-year-old Jamea Harris. Spears denied these claims after the article was published in 2023, which cited an anonymous source.
Spears expressed his distress over the false statements made about him and thanked Alabama Athletics for supporting him. After starting his college career at Alabama, he transferred to Marshall in 2024 and has recently moved to Division II West Liberty.
