Kallum Watkins Joins England Rugby League World Cup Squad as Morgan Smithies Withdraws
Kallum Watkins has been named as a late addition to England's Rugby League World Cup squad following the injury withdrawal of Morgan Smithies.
The 35-year-old forward from Leeds Rhinos is set to participate in his fourth World Cup, having previously played in 2013, 2017, and 2022. Smithies' exit is a setback for the team as he prepares to join the Perth Bears for the 2027 NRL season.
Head coach Brian McDermott expressed disappointment over Smithies' injury, highlighting his contributions to the team. Watkins, who has 32 international caps, will join the squad in Perth ahead of England's opening match against Tonga but will not play in that game. He is expected to be available for subsequent matches against France and Papua New Guinea.
