Kansas City Royals Designate Starling Marte for Assignment
The Kansas City Royals have concluded their experiment with Starling Marte, designating him for assignment as part of a series of roster changes announced on Monday.
Marte, who was signed to a one-year contract for the 2026 season, struggled with a batting line of .242/.298/.314 in 168 plate appearances, hitting two home runs and five doubles. His previous two seasons had shown more promise, with a .269/.331/.398 line over 699 plate appearances, but injuries and age limited his effectiveness.
At 37 years old, Marte's future in Major League Baseball is uncertain. He will go through waivers, and if not claimed, he may have the opportunity to sign a minor league deal or receive a non-roster invitation to spring training in 2027.
