Koval's father serves as a drone operator in the Ukrainian military, and her departure follows a conversation with Mulkey, where she expressed her need to leave for personal reasons. Mulkey emphasized the importance of respecting Koval's privacy and acknowledged the difficulty of her decision.

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has made this situation particularly sensitive for Koval. Mulkey had previously altered a team drill's name to reflect Koval's heritage and had discussed the recruitment of Minaeva with her beforehand.
