Katie Lynch Advocates for Expanding AFL Pride Round
Katie Lynch, a player for the Gold Coast Suns, has expressed her desire for the AFL's dedicated Pride Round to be expanded across the entire league. She believes that this initiative, which currently celebrates inclusion and diversity within the AFLW, could benefit the men's teams and the broader community.
Lynch highlighted that the Pride Round, introduced in 2021, brings a unique energy to the competition, coinciding with the end of the men's season and the lead-up to the women's finals. She noted that many players resonate with the movement, which fosters a sense of celebration and joy.
The AFL has been addressing issues of homophobia within the sport, with CEO Andrew Dillon emphasizing that such behavior is unacceptable. Lynch believes that extending Pride Round could help create a more inclusive environment and enhance connections among fans and players. This year, she collaborated on the design of the Suns' Pride guernsey, which reflects the celebration of the queer community.
