Kayla Harrison Discusses Neck Surgery and Upcoming Fight with Amanda Nunes
Kayla Harrison recently revealed the details of her severe neck injury that led to her withdrawal from the scheduled UFC 324 fight against Amanda Nunes. The reigning UFC women’s bantamweight champion underwent emergency surgery just two weeks before the bout due to her deteriorating condition.
Harrison experienced significant pain, including symptoms that affected her arm and sleep. After exhausting non-surgical options, including physical therapy and stem-cell injections, she was advised to undergo a two-level spinal fusion following the discovery of five herniated discs. The surgery marked a significant moment in her career, as it forced her to miss a highly anticipated matchup.
Despite the challenges of recovery, including both physical and mental hurdles, Harrison expressed relief at feeling like herself again. She is now preparing for her return to the Octagon, where she will face Nunes at UFC 334 on November 14 in New York City. This fight will be particularly significant as it marks Nunes' return to MMA after her retirement in 2023, and both fighters share a training background at American Top Team.
