Kentucky Court Rules Against NCAA, Allowing 30 Athletes to Compete
A Kentucky Court of Appeals judge ruled on Friday against the NCAA's emergency request to prevent 30 college athletes from competing, just as the basketball season is set to start.
The athletes, including Mark Mitchell from Missouri and Skyy Clark from LSU, were granted a temporary injunction on October 16, enabling them to play while the NCAA appeals a decision that permits members of the 2022 high school graduating class to utilize a new eligibility model. This model allows athletes five years of eligibility starting at age 19 or upon high school graduation.
The ruling also affects football players involved in the litigation, such as Alex Afari Jr. from Kentucky and Thomas Castellanos from Texas Tech, allowing them to continue competing. This decision follows a similar ruling by the Ohio Supreme Court, which upheld the eligibility of players in a related case. The NCAA expressed disappointment over these outcomes, emphasizing the competitive implications of ineligible players participating in games.
