Kenya to Host World Athletics Championships in 2029
Nairobi has been chosen to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, marking the first time the event will take place in Africa. Munich will follow as the host city for the 2031 Championships, as announced during the World Athletics Council Meeting held in Budapest.
The decision reflects a competitive bidding process, with World Athletics President Sebastian Coe highlighting the strong proposals from both cities. Nairobi's selection is seen as a significant milestone for athletics in Africa, building on the continent's growing experience in hosting major events.
Nairobi's bid was strengthened by its history of successful athletics events, including the World U18 Championships in 2017 and the World U20 Championships in 2021. The city is also preparing its Kasarani Stadium for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in 2027, ensuring it meets the standards for the World Championships.
