Kettlebells Enhance Triathlon Strength Training
Strength training is crucial for triathletes, yet many often neglect it. A solution for those lacking a comprehensive gym setup is to incorporate one or two kettlebells into their routine.
Kettlebells provide a versatile tool for strength training, suitable for use at home or in the gym. Jenna-Caer Seefried, a triathlon coach and strength conditioning expert, emphasizes the importance of consistent strength training for achieving fitness goals and reducing injury risks. She recommends that athletes engage in strength workouts two to three times a week, focusing on different aspects depending on the training season.
Seefried highlights that kettlebells allow for dynamic movements that engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously, making them effective for triathletes. She suggests exercises such as single-leg split lunges, Bulgarian split squats, and kneeling shoulder presses, which help improve strength and balance. For core workouts, she recommends incorporating rotational movements to better mimic the actions involved in swimming and running. Seefried advises starting with lighter weights to prevent injury and gradually increasing intensity as strength improves.
