Kevin Ruane: Southport's Town Crier Competes in World Championships

Kevin Ruane, the town crier for Southport and Sefton, is set to compete in the World Town Crier Championships in Chester next month. Ruane, who has held the ceremonial role for less than 18 months, was inspired to take on this position after his wife suggested he would excel at it during a visit to Knaresborough.

Since becoming the town crier, Ruane has achieved notable success, including winning the Best Home Cry category at the Loyal Company of Town Criers British Championships earlier this month. His proclamation highlighted various attractions in the area, such as the docks of Bootle and the Grand National at Aintree Racecourse.

Ruane, who has a background as an Army veteran and was awarded an MBE for his firefighting services, expressed his excitement about representing Southport. He acknowledged the high level of competition he will face in Chester, where 25 town criers from various countries will compete. Despite feeling nervous, he is determined to perform well.
