Khabib Acknowledges Poirier's Influence on Makhachev After Fight
Recent behind-the-scenes footage has emerged showing the aftermath of Islam Makhachev's latest lightweight fight, where he faced Dustin Poirier. Makhachev, the current UFC welterweight champion, is set to compete again in Philadelphia this Saturday against Ian Machado Garry.
In June 2024, Makhachev defended his lightweight title against Poirier in a challenging match that nearly lasted the full five rounds. He ultimately submitted Poirier with a D’arce choke in the final round, marking a significant moment in his impressive 16-fight winning streak. After the fight, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Makhachev's coach, acknowledged Poirier's role in Makhachev's development as a fighter, expressing gratitude for the lessons learned during their bout.
Poirier, who fought once more after this match, lost to Max Holloway in his retirement fight at UFC 318 last summer. Makhachev continued his career by submitting Renato Moicano before moving up in weight classes, aiming for further success against Garry at UFC 330.
