Kona Takahashi May Pursue MLB Opportunities This Offseason
Kona Takahashi, a 29-year-old right-hander from Japan, could be looking at Major League Baseball opportunities this offseason as he becomes eligible for international free agency. This marks the second consecutive year he is considering a move to MLB.
A report from Nikkan Sports indicated that Takahashi is interested in exploring these opportunities. Last offseason, he was granted permission to speak with MLB teams but ultimately chose to stay with the Seibu Lions, declining offers from three major league clubs.
To qualify for international free agency, NPB players must have at least nine years of service time. Takahashi, who will turn 30 soon, has shown solid performance in Japan, achieving a personal-best strikeout rate of 20.7% this season and a 2.54 ERA over 138 1/3 innings. While he has been projected as a potential fifth starter in MLB, some scouts believe he may be better suited for a bullpen role. Other NPB players, including Teruaki Sato and Kaima Taira, are also expected to seek MLB opportunities this winter.
