Kostecki and Hazelwood Claim Victory at Bathurst 1000 After Late Fuel Misfortune for De Pasquale and Holdsworth
Brodie Kostecki and Todd Hazelwood achieved a surprising victory at the Bathurst 1000 held at Mount Panorama, following a dramatic turn of events on the final lap. Anton De Pasquale and Lee Holdsworth were leading the race when they ran out of fuel, allowing Kostecki and Hazelwood to take the win.
The race, which consisted of 161 laps, was competitive and fast-paced, with Kostecki and Hazelwood initially appearing to be out of contention. A late safety car incident involving Chaz Mostert altered the dynamics, bringing Kostecki back into the race. De Pasquale's team had opted for a short fuel strategy during the final pit stop, which ultimately backfired as the car slowed down, leading to their retirement.
In the aftermath, Will Brown and Scott Pye finished in second place, while Matt Stone Racing secured an unexpected third. The race also highlighted challenges faced by teams regarding tyre and brake performance, with some experiencing issues due to high temperatures and the quality of brake pads. The next event in the Supercars Finals series is set to take place on the Gold Coast later this month.
