Kyle Walker Reflects on England Retirement and Future Aspirations
Kyle Walker, the former England defender, has announced his retirement from international football, stating he feels at ease with his decision. The 36-year-old, who earned 96 caps and participated in five major tournaments, hopes this choice will extend his club career.
Walker, who played for Burnley after a successful stint at Manchester City, made his retirement announcement in March. He reflected on his time with the national team, including appearances in the finals of the European Championship in 2021 and 2024, and the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup. He noted that injuries to other players during the recent tournament in North America could have opened the door for his return, but he accepted his decision to retire.
At a media event for the English Football League season, Walker mentioned his desire to follow in the footsteps of his former teammate James Milner, who retired from international play at 30 but continued to excel in club football for another decade. Walker plans to evaluate his performance season by season as he continues his career with Burnley.
