Kyler Murray Leads Vikings QB Competition Over J.J. McCarthy

Kyler Murray, a recent free-agent signing, is reportedly the leading candidate for the Minnesota Vikings' starting quarterback role, surpassing 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy.

Vikings reporter Kevin Seifert noted that Murray has been given approximately two-thirds of the first-team snaps during practice, indicating a consistent pattern that may favor his chances. This distribution of practice reps is crucial, especially as the team prepares for their preseason opener against the New York Giants on August 15.

Additionally, the Vikings have been adjusting their offensive strategies, incorporating more shotgun and pistol formations, which contrasts with their previous under-center approach. Murray, who was the first overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and has two Pro Bowl selections, is expected to be named the starting quarterback soon unless McCarthy demonstrates significant improvement in upcoming practices.
