Kyler Murray Named Starting Quarterback for Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings have appointed Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback, concluding the team's quarterback competition. This decision was reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Murray, who was the first overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, joined the Vikings on a one-year contract this offseason with the aim of securing the starting position over J.J. McCarthy. With this announcement made prior to the first preseason game, Murray will take all starter reps in preparation for the upcoming regular season.

Last season, Murray played five games for the Arizona Cardinals, achieving a completion rate of 68.3 percent with 962 passing yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions. In 2024, he started all 17 games, amassing 3,851 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft, will now serve as a backup after struggling with injuries and performance issues in his previous seasons.

The Vikings are scheduled to play their first preseason game against the Giants on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.
