Lando Norris Faces Historic Challenge in F1 Title Defense
Lando Norris is at risk of becoming the first reigning Formula 1 world champion since Damon Hill in 1997 to finish his title defense outside the top five. Currently, Norris holds the sixth position in the drivers' standings with 201 points, as the season approaches its conclusion with six races remaining.
Having won the championship in 2025, Norris's performance this season has been notably poor. If he finishes sixth or lower, he will match Hill's record of finishing 12th in 1997 after being dropped by Williams. Norris is only 14 points behind Charles Leclerc in fifth and 20 points behind Max Verstappen in fourth, indicating that there is still a chance for improvement if McLaren can enhance the car's performance.
After a fourth-place finish at the Singapore Grand Prix, Norris expressed concerns about the car's speed and drivability. Team principal Andrea Stella acknowledged the car's strengths and weaknesses, noting that it performs better on low-speed tracks but struggles on circuits with long straights, which could pose challenges in upcoming races.
