LCR Team Boss Discusses New MotoGP Qualifying Format
Lucio Cecchinello, the LCR team boss, has shared insights on the upcoming changes to the MotoGP qualifying format set for 2027. He reassured that the new structure, which includes both Friday Sprint Qualifying and Saturday's Q1 featuring 22 riders in a single 15-minute session, will not be as perilous as some have feared.
Cecchinello explained that the limited tyre allocation for these sessions has been carefully planned, with riders restricted to one set of tyres during the sprint qualifying. This limitation is expected to influence strategies, as teams will need to decide when to send their riders out to avoid potential risks such as yellow flags. Additionally, the tyre allocation for Saturday will also be reduced, making the management of resources across the two sessions more critical.
He further noted that the removal of the warm-up session will be replaced by an extended window for sighting laps, which is intended to better align with track conditions. Cecchinello emphasized that these changes were initiated by the teams and have been thoughtfully considered to enhance the overall experience.
