Leasowe Lighthouse Saved from Disrepair by Local Efforts
Leasowe Lighthouse, located in Wirral, England, was constructed in 1763 and is recognized as the oldest surviving brick-built lighthouse in the UK. Standing at 110 feet tall, it played a crucial role in preventing shipwrecks in Liverpool Bay until it became obsolete and fell into disrepair.
The lighthouse was saved in 1989 when the Friends of Leasowe Lighthouse was established by local residents. This group has been responsible for its maintenance and preservation, which includes a £30,000 refurbishment scheme approved by the local council.
Designated as a Grade II-listed building in 1952, the lighthouse offers stunning views and hosts regular open days and events to engage the community and raise funds for its upkeep. Volunteers express their enjoyment of the site, noting the changing scenery with tides and weather.
