Leon Baptiste and Other Athletes Convicted in Morocco for Minor's Sexual Assault Case
Three former British athletes, Leon Baptiste, Will Sharman, and Lamin Deen, were convicted in Morocco as part of a case involving the sexual assault of a minor by a sprinting coach. Baptiste, a gold medallist at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, is currently serving an eight-month prison sentence in Marrakech.
The convictions stem from an incident where a girl reported being brought to a villa and assaulted. Baptiste was found guilty of sexual assault, while Sharman, his brother Richard, and Deen received suspended sentences for participating in the enticement of the minor. They claimed they were unaware of their convictions until informed by the media.
In addition to the athletes, others involved in the case, including a housekeeper and security guards, were also convicted. The minor was awarded civil compensation, and the nightclub where the group met her has been closed since the investigation began. The case has raised concerns regarding the judicial process and the treatment of sexual assault cases involving minors in Morocco.
