Leylah Fernandez achieved a victory for Canada on Wednesday night, becoming the only Canadian singles player to advance at the National Bank Open in Toronto.

The No. 30 seed from Laval, Quebec, defeated Mexico's Renata Zarazua with a score of 6-2, 6-2 in a second-round match on Centre Court. Prior to her match, Fernandez was already the last Canadian in the singles draws after receiving a bye in the first round.

This win came after a difficult 48 hours for Canadian tennis, during which top men's player Felix Auger-Aliassime withdrew due to a back injury, and Denis Shapovalov and Gabriel Diallo retired from their matches with injuries. Additionally, defending women's champion Victoria Mboko had to withdraw with a knee injury. Fernandez, who has struggled this year with a record of 13-20, will face No. 5 seed Mirra Andreeva in her next match.
