Life-Size Statue of The Vivienne Planned for Liverpool's Pride Quarter
Plans have been announced for a life-size statue of drag artist James Lee Williams, widely recognized as The Vivienne, to be placed at the entrance of Liverpool's Pride Quarter. Williams, who was the inaugural winner of Ru Paul's Drag Race UK in 2019, passed away in January 2025 at the age of 32 due to struggles with ketamine addiction.
The House of The Vivienne CIC, founded by Williams' family, is spearheading the project. Williams' sister, Chanel, emphasized the importance of the statue in preserving his memory and supporting those facing similar challenges. She noted that the statue would serve as a reminder that individuals do not have to face their struggles alone.
The statue will be situated at the junction of Victoria Street and Stanley Street, a location significant to Williams' journey. He began his career performing in Liverpool's bars and clubs before gaining national fame. The project has received initial funding from the Liverpool Business Improvement District, with leaders expressing pride in supporting a tribute that reflects the city's cultural heritage.
