Lionel Messi reached a milestone of 936 career goals at the age of 39 following his two-goal performance in Inter Miami's 3–1 win against Atlanta United.
Messi's achievement puts him ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo's goal tally at the same age. When Ronaldo turned 39 on February 5, 2024, he had scored 873 goals in 1,204 matches, and by his 40th birthday, he had increased his total to 923 goals.
Messi, who turned 39 on June 24, 2026, had 916 goals at that time and has since added 20 more. Despite having retired from international play, Messi is still in contention to reach 1,000 career goals, a milestone that Ronaldo is also approaching, currently sitting 19 goals shy of that mark.
