Lionel Messi has officially announced his retirement from international football, a decision he described as painful but necessary. The 39-year-old, who led Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup, holds the record as the nation's all-time leading scorer with 125 goals in 207 matches.

In his statement on Instagram, Messi expressed that he has given his all to the national team and feels he has nothing left to contribute. He acknowledged the emergence of talented young players who deserve their opportunity. Earlier this year, he reflected on his future in football following the passing of his father, Jorge, which influenced his decision.

Messi had penned his retirement message on July 21, shortly after Argentina's loss to Spain in the World Cup final. He currently plays for Inter Miami.
